Pederson Guitars
I began building stringed instruments in the early 70’s in Minneapolis, Minnesota during a “Golden Age” of both acoustic music and handmade instruments.
All genres of music were thriving and as a luthier, I and many others enjoyed learning our craft through the work and example of C.F Martin, Orville Gibson, Lloyd Loar, the masters of classical and flamenco, and violin makers, and of course each other.
As we mastered the fundamentals of lutherie there came the opportunity to develop our own styles and individual expression through the needs of new music and when possible adding to the evolution of the guitar.
Entering a new millennium, the guitar is once again experiencing an evolution of using new and improved styles and innovation often returning to the past traditions for inspiration. Those of us who continue in the craft strive to meet the demands of the music with the collaboration of musicians to create instruments that can advance their art.
Something new
I am very pleased to be introducing a guitar that combines the aesthetics of antiquity with new innovations for the future.
Beginning with a lute-like, ovoid shaped body, inspired by river rocks worn through natural erosion into stream- lined forms. A cutout is added to cradle on the leg. I chose a back and side construction is similar to the style of Renaissance and Baroque guitars using multiple, book matched staves. The neck is offset for balance and comfort. The neck joins the body without an external heel for extended access to the upper frets. I have positioned the sound hole in the upper bout providing a greater surface of the top for tone and directing the sound directly to the player. The top bracing is a modified lattice or grid pattern that results in excellent power and balance. I have separated the saddle into a forward adjustable bridge with the pins or tie block located behind.
Whether steel string flat top, classical or arch top, the stress to the top is spread out with more direct contact with the vibrating strings. This unique arrangement of the two piece saddle provides the opportunity to adjust the string action easily depending upon the demands of playing style. This arrangement and construction results in a rich, full balanced tone with a distinct echoing, reverb quality. The offset peg head completes the design as a balanced, sculptural form.
